HENRY JAMES' NOVEL THE TURN OF THE SCREW IS A TALE OF MYSTERY AND TERROR. IT INVOLVES A GOVERNESS WHO BELIEVES THAT THE CHILDREN SHE CARES FOR ARE POSSESSED BY GHOSTS AND SHE SEEKS TO EXORCISE THEM OF THESE GHOSTS. THE MOVIE THE INNOCENTS PORTRAYS THE GENERAL PLOT OF JAMES' THE TURN OF THE SCREW. THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO IS HOW THE ENDING PLAYS OUT. IN THE NOVEL THE SCENE TAKES PLACE IN THE DINGING ROOM. THE PHYSICAL STATE OF MILES THROUGHOUT THE SCENE SUGGESTS TO THE READER THAT THE GOVERNESS'S BEHAVIOR IS HAVING A DANEROUS EFFECT ON HIM. JAMES DESCRIBES MILES TO BE SWEATING AND BREATHING HARD. THE GOVERNESS'S ACTIONS DURING THIS SCENE SEEM TO BE ON THE VIOLENT SIDE. IN THE END, MILES DIES IN HER ARMS. THE SCENE MADE IT LLOK LIKE SHE MAY HAVE SMOTHERED HIM TO DEATH. IN THE MOVIE, THE SCENE TAKES PLACE OUT IN THE GARDEN. THE GOVERNESS TRIES TO GET MILES TO SPEAK OF QUINTS NAME THINKING THAT THAT WILL RELEASE THE SPIRIT OF QUINT. MILES SEEMS TERRIFIED BY THE GOVERNESS'S BEHAVIOR AND ALIKE THE NOVEL HE DIES. IN THE MOVIE IT LOOKS AS IF HE HAD DIED OF SHEER TERROR. THE MOVIE WAS SPOOLY TO WATCH AND THE CHILDREN DID SEEM CREEPY, BUT I PREFERED THE BOOK MORE. BY READING THE NOVEL I WAS ABLE TO USE THE DESCRIPTIVE TECHNIQUES OR THE AUTHOR AND FEEL AS OF I WERE PART OF THE STORY. THIS ALLOWED ME TO USE MY OWN THOUGHTS AND GET A REAL FEEL FOR THE PLOT OF THE STORY AND ALL OF ITS CHARACTERS.
