Online Education and Organizational Transformation

Participation in distance learning programs has been on a constant increase over the past few years, partially contributing to the fact that more working adults have found it necessary to continue their education in order to improve on current job skills or offer more security for future employment. Others have found it more convenient and feasible to take courses in the privacy of their own homes and on their own terms and schedules. .
In the past, these type programs were geared towards nontraditional students who desired an alternate means for completing their education by taking a needed class that was offered outside of normal school hours. These classes were often times offered through institutions other than the individual's home school or by instructors who went past the school's normal criteria. .
Today, an education may be obtained and degrees can be earned exclusively through online resources. Many colleges and universities offer complete curriculum degree programs that lead to the receipt of a certifying diploma, Associates, Bachelors, Masters and some Doctoral degrees. Administrators have realized that this valuable resource not only has a substantial financial benefit, but it also decreases the amount of routine administrative work. For example, professors may not be required to meet with the individual students at any point during the course. The student and professor can communicate at specific and designated times that allow for convenience to both parties and the assignments are timed and dated to ensure that requirements are met in a timely manner. These courses also reduce the need for classroom space and the need for concern with other class time meetings, which often poses a major conflict on many campuses.
In addition, many courses that may have normally been canceled for lack of enrollment have experienced an increase due to online participation. As stated by Leigh S.
