Angels are often depicted in the Bible as heavenly messengers, or the means by which God communicates with certain individuals. Certain angels are sent on a specific mission by God, such as the angel Gabriel's mission to Mary. Other angels are our guardian angels, the angels that are our personal protectors. Jesus himself said, "See that you despise not on of these little ones; for I say to you that their angels in Heaven always see the face of My Father Who is in Heaven" (Matt 18;10). The feast day of the guardian angels is on October 2nd.
Angels are spiritual beings with a free will and intellect. They, and we also, are free to choose to serve God or not. They have a soul, like we do, and they are the highest order of creation. We should take personal interest in angels because each of us is protected by one, and we should want to know as much about them as we can, as they see the face of God, and do His work. .
We know on the authority of Scripture that there are nine orders of angels- Angels, Archangels, Virtues, Powers, Principalities, Dominations, Throne, Cherubim and Seraphim. That there are Angels and Archangels nearly every page of the Bible tell us, and the books of the Prophets talk of Cherubim and Seraphim. St. Paul mentions the other levels in his writings to the Ephesians and Colossians. When we put them all together, we see that we have the nine orders. Angels are God's messengers. We should look to them to help us, who do not know God quite so intimately. They will protect us. .
