In our society, we should offer everyone a second chance no matter what their offense might be. A criminal's past should not follow through to the future because what is done is done. Harsh sentences or any punishments at all ruin the individual's quality of life in a country where everyone is guaranteed life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. One can really see the justice system is working when a serial killer only has to serve two years. It's only fair for someone who has done something wrong to be helped back into society to be productive and contribute to the economy.
