Webster's Dictionary defines pride as 1) Proper respect for ones own dignity and worth. 4) Excessive self esteem; conceit (pg 543). In the book The Crucible several girls lie to get out of trouble. It starts out a small lie but gets blown out of proportion. When the girls lied they also got other people involved as well because they blamed it on others. Because of the time period that this happened in witchcraft was what they blamed it on when people did some thing that was out of the ordinary. There are 3 main characters in this book. The first is Reverend Hale, he is an exorcist. The second character is Elizabeth Proctor; she is the wife of John Proctor. The third character is John Proctor. .
The first character is Reverend Hale. He is a exorcist in this book. His pride in this book is that he is conceited and thinks he is better than every one else because he is highly educated. He is graduated from Harvard. He has to make sure that every one knows he is smart. He shows this when he says " he has p[assed a hundred rumors that make him smile at the ignorance of the Yeomary in this most precise science. Page 34" the result of this pride is when he says " you know do you not, that I have no connection with the court I would save your husbands life, for if he is taken I count myself his murderer. Page 122" His pride was not justified because he only wanted every thing for himself.
The second character is Elisabeth Proctor. She is John Proctors wife and she distrusts him because he had an affair with another girl. Her pride is self-righteousness. She also thinks that she is better than every one else. She shows this when she says, " I do not judge you the magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. Page 52-53"The final result of her pride is " I am no goody good that sleeps in ditches, nor osburns, drunk and half witted. Page 58" Her pride was not justified because she was just as good as any one else and had no reason to think she was any better.
