Worst Crimes of the Century

 

The explosion destroyed the front half of the nine-story building killing one hundred and sixty-eight people (Clark, 1995). Nineteen of the victims were young children that where in the facility's daycare center (Ottley, 1995). One victim described it by saying "Everything went black. It was like somebody had turned out the light. And then, it seemed like the whole world ended." (Camp,1995) Later that morning a 1977 yellow Mercury was pulled over by police in the small town of Perry, Oklahoma, which is some seventy-five miles from Oklahoma City (Ottley, 1995). When the driver was pulled over and told he did not have plates on the car Trooper Charlie Hanger noticed a bulge in the driver's jacket, the officer cuffed the driver and confiscated a 9-mm Glock and a knife (Ottley, 1995). The driver of the car would later be charged with 169 counts of murder, that driver was Timothy McVeigh. McVeigh was held at the local station to await his day in court. Meanwhile, the FBI had found where the Rider Truck was rented from. The name on the rental form was Kline. A hotel worker named Lea McGown of the Dreamland Motel said she recognized the picture the federal agents showed her of a man who had rented a room from them. He had registered under the name McVeigh. The address given on the rental form was Terry Nichols address (Ottley, 1995). McVeigh was still in custody at the time and was soon moved to a more secure location. Soon after, Terry Nichols drove to the police station to talk with some officers, and he was arrested. News of their capture surprised and terrified the nation. Many believed, due to the media speculation, that the bombing had something to do with Islamic extremist like the Twin Tower bombing in New York, but they were wrong. "Suddenly, the painful realization dawned: men who looked like the guys next door had perpetrated this horrendous crime - the costliest in American history - both in human and financial terms.
