Kim

This story we just read was about a boy named Kim who is trying to discover his identity in the country which he was born. Kim does not know who he is, and sets out on a journey to try a sort out what he is to become. He was born a young Irish child named Kimball O"Hara. Kim's father was an Irish soldier, but he basically grew up as an orphan child. Instead of real parents he was looked after by an old prostitute lady. Although he was an Irish child his skin was very dark like the native street urchins. Kim could only speak very slight English and was not able to read and write. These factors led to the journey he takes to figure out where he belongs. .
The journey enables Kim to make some very valuable friendships along the way. He becomes good friends with a number of people including Lama, Mahbub Ali, Babu Hurree, and Colonel Creighton. Teshoo Lama probably became Kims best friend in the whole story. This is possibly due to the fact that they both turn down a relationship with a female partner on their respected quests. They see women as a danger leading them away from what they started off to find, in Kims case it's his identity. .
In Kim the two main characters are Kim and Lama. They each are taking their own quest to figure out something in their lives. Both characters have in common the fact that neither has any real family and don't feel like they belong where they are right now in their life. Teshoo Lama is probably the closest friend Kim has in this book. He is a Buddhist whose journey is to rid him of worldly objects and the idea of emotions. Kim on the other hand is on a totally different kind of quest. His is of being a spy and leading a life in disguise not being able to truly share his own feelings with anyone. The two men are very different in who they are and how they will fulfill the quest each are on, but we found that they become dependent on one another for support.
