My Commitment to America's Future

In spite of all of the health warnings, teenagers continue to get hooked on tobacco even though they all know that it is bad for them. It is therefore logical to conclude that a shallow knowledge of the health risks is not enough to convince teenagers not to smoke. One in every three teens who begin to smoke will eventually die from it or have a smoking-related problem in the future. We need to stand up as one to solve this rising epidemic. It is taking away our future of young people by turning them into addicts. There are many things we could possibly do to prevent more addiction and deaths.
A simple way that I have become involved in anti-smoking organizations is through the internet. Standonline.org and truth.org are two very informative web sites that gives people chances to fight against smoking. They have online petitions that you can sign that say you do not want smoking in movies or on television anymore. They also have support groups, chat rooms, anti-smoking t-shirts, and facts and statistics that would shock you.
Another thing that I can easily do to help stop smoking is to obviously not smoke. When I see others smoking, I am always quick to inform them on how what they are doing is wrong. I try to get smokers to see how unworthy it is to smoke by giving them reasons not to, such as how there are over three hundred chemicals in one cigarette. Some listen to me and consider what I am saying, and I always make sure I tell them that I will help them quit in any way that I can.
One thing I would like to help change for the future is the age requirement to buy cigarettes. In the United States, anyone eighteen or older is able to purchase tobacco products. This is way too young because most eighteen year-olds are still in high school. Many younger students conveniently rely on the upperclassmen that they meet in their classes and other school related activities to support their habit.
