The United Nations Versus the European Union

In particular, the Community shall aim at reducing disparities between the levels of development of the various regions and the backwardness of the least favored regions or islands, including rural areas. .
Europe has experienced many problems with this goal, specifically with social dumping'(the practice of firms especially from developed Western nations employing labor in countries and regions that have less social standards and therefore lower costs of labor). An example of this situation was the very public move made by the Hoover vacuum company in moving its labor plants from Dijon to Scotland; this action spoke very loudly to the people of the European community, showing that there was much inequality in the standards of living even in Europe.
To enact the ambitious goals of repairing the social and economic progress of the European region, the European Union has the Economic and Social Committee that was founded to monitor agriculture, rural development, the environment, employment, social affairs, and citizenship among many other things. Its progress is remarkable; "the treaty of Rome contained a minimal and disparate number of articles concerning social and employment affairs,"" whereas today's committee, although still working towards its goals of complete eradication of poverty, inequality, pollution and poorer standards of living in different regions, has made amazing progress towards its goals by increasing legislation in proactive manners (i.e. coordinating national policies regarding health-care in a welfare state manner).
The purposes of the European ECOSOC are very similar to the ECOSOC of the United Nations, which is an umbrella organization with many smaller sub-agencies under its domain that is responsible for "promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress; identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems; facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
