             Followed by the Black Circle in 1920, St Petersburg and the Black Cross, Paris the Black Square can be related to an icon tradition that survived so strongly in Russia, using ancient forms that were increasingly admired by Russian artists seeking to exert their independence from western European traditions. Malevich declared that the Black Square constituted the "zero of form-, an end to old conventions and the origin of a new pictorial language. The forms of this language were strictly geometrical, but they rapidly evolved into increasingly complex paintings in which the geometrical elements employed richer colors and inhabited an ambiguous and complex pictorial space. Despite its reference to the icon tradition, the Black Square presented no recognizably Christian image, but for Malevich himself suprematism remained a mystical experience associated with concepts of the Fourth dimension and the nature of time. .
             The fourth dimension was pure sensation and the process and methods to achieve those feelings. Pure sensation was the result of tension and movement between color, form and ground. In attempting to reach the fourth dimension Malevich believed that the viewer must feel the art. Malevich broke down the art and abstracted it to basic geometric shapes and chose colors that were not represented in nature. The forms were now "non-objective-. He did this because he was trying to create only pure sensation, not pretty pictures; he wanted nothing to do with the three dimensional world.
             One of the themes of Malevich's Suprematist works was the depiction of movement and dynamism. Malevich was very intrigued by flight, airplanes and antigravity. Malevich used the theme of flight to incite the feeling of movement in his works. For most of Malevich's paintings depicting flight, the view is from above. The viewer is looking down on the sequence of events. To illustrate flight and a gravity-free space, Malevich placed geometric color blocks over a background of white.
