to present day the question of why there is evil and why there is suffering has been in the head of every person. The time when Gilgamesh was written it was the belief that there were Gods and Goddesses for every part of the universe. In the epic of Gilgamesh the nature of the divine power is some what unclear. The Gods and Goddesses are depicted as having supper human powers, such as eternal life and the ability of cursing people and things. Much to the opposite of Gilgamesh, the scriptures of Genesis and Job the divine power, God, is a being that forgives the sins of the people, but does not over look the large sins and does take action in the form of curses. However, after creating the earth God saw that people were sinning and breaking commandments, so he punished his people with the great flood. With God being a forgiving being he told Noah through a dream that he should build an arc and bring two of every living thing, one male and one female. This great flood wiped out all that was evil and all that was bad. .
The relationship of the divine power to the human beings is greatly different between the epic of Gilgamesh and the scriptures of Genesis and Job. In the epic of Gilgamesh, the divine powers walk among the humans and interact with the humans. The goddess of love, Ishtar, tried to seduce Gilgamesh, but Gilgamesh fought the seduction and was later punished for his decision. In the scriptures of Genesis and Job the divine power, Lord God, is set above all others and has super human powers. God was the one that created the earth and all living things. He is seen to only have contact through visions of his worshippers.
The codes of conduct in the epic of Gilgamesh were made up by the person who was ruling at that time. These laws were often changed years later by a new ruler. The laws that were presented in the Book of Job were in the form of the Ten Commandments. The commandments were a set of laws sent down by God in order for his people to live without sin and prosper in the future.
