The Ending of Eva Luna

Women like La Madrina and Elvira demonstrate the conformity of women during the time of Eva Luna. Eva decides not to give in to the patriarchal values and the role that was expected of her. Her longing to escape the marginalisation she experienced is further reinforced when ultimately she obtains a job as a writer for telenovellas. Traditionally, females of Eva's stature would not be expected to be able to acquire a job of such a high level. Eva was able to adopt a role according to her own desires, growing away from the phallocentric values which existed during that time. .
Eva's final achievement of writing telenovellas is also linked to the idea Allende portrays about the power of storytelling and self-authorship. Eva's vivid imagination is not the only thing responsible for allowing her to create such powerful and creative storytelling - she also inherits it from her mother. In the house of Professor Jones, Eva, as the daughter of a servant, was expected to limit her mind to the dark domestic world in which she was born, but her imagination allowed her to create an alternate reality characterised by light - "One word from me and abracadabra! Reality was transformed." (p.24) Storytelling provided Eva with an escape from her "world [which] was bounded by the iron railings of the garden", suggesting her life was restricted to the boundaries of the dead Eurocentric Professor's house. Her attempt to escape this reflects her dislike for the life she was being subjected to as a mestizo female. Her imagination provided her with a means of escape from the restrictive role she was forced to play, and highlighted the fact that instead of conforming to society's expectations, she could alternatively satisfy her own. Allende reinforces the power of storytelling by providing Eva with the job of a writer in the end of the novel. Eva was able to use her talent and past time of storytelling in a professional manner and not only continue to use it as a means of escape, but as entertainment for others too.
