Revitalization vs Gentrification

 

Lastly the Higher Income Neighborhoods are the neighborhoods that already had higher-incomes in the 1990s like the Upper West Side and Chelsea areas. The closer you are to Manhattan the higher the income in the neighborhood and the more rent you will have to pay. Gentrification's main focus is to switch up the social class of Urban neighborhoods. The idea is that by mixing social classes it will lower crime and increase revenue. While revitalization is similar in some aspects it contains some components that gentrification has left out.
             Revitalization.
             Revitalization defined as "to give new life to" is a different approach to gentrification. Asset building in relation to revitalization is defined broadly to include all potential resources in a community [ CITATION Deb97 l 1033 ]. This means to not only utilize the financial resources in the community but to incorporate the talents and skills of the residents in the community. This is the idea that by uplifting and enriching the residents in the community it will eventually fix the socioeconomics of the neighborhood. This is accomplished by instilling community development programs. Programs that will help residents to become home and business owners. In the article Asset Building as a Community Revitalization Strategy, they were able to take in to account the personal well-being, economic security, civic behavior, women's status and children's well-being of residents in low-income neighborhoods through different studies. Through conducting these studies, they were able to gain knowledge of how residents of low-income communities felt. Their studies proved that home and business owning related to lower economic strain, Self employment investment demonstration businesses had high survival rates which created jobs and reduced welfare receipts, and improved overall economic well-being through housing and health care.
