Rather than finding this experience traumatizing; he found it intriguing and became overly obsessed with death. He then began mutilating animals and torturing them to their deaths; where he would then dissect and further experiment on the carcasses. In the house where Holmes grew up, the trees in the back yard still had the nails in them to which Holmes used to nail his mutilated animals to. This behavior he exhibited as a child may have led to his adult murder methods and proxy of murders. Being more intelligent; Holmes went on to college at the University of Michigan's Department of Medicine and Surgery. This field could not have been more perfect for him and his life hobbies. During his enrollment he would steal cadavers and disfigure them to make them look like they were in accidental deaths; he would then collect life insurance policies of the deceased and collect money on the human remains. His fascination with selling skeletons he stole; in my opinion leads me to believe that the bullying he endured in his adolescent years made him recreate the event of having his own innocence stolen by a skeleton and now uses skeletons as the repayment he deserves. There is no solid confirmation of the school-yard bullying; however it does make logical sense that there is a high chance of it. Holmes created a horror hotel which he called The Castle. He designed and was the sole architecture of this establishment. While building he would hire and fire various work men as he did not want anyone to know the ins and outs besides himself. Having a distrust of his workers has to mean someone in his past he may have had a deep connection with possibly outed him and made him feel he could not trust anyone. An example of this is he would hire one man to build half the stairway and another to build the other half of the stairway. He made it a maze of unknown stairways, rooms and even doors with bricks behind them.
