The Greenpeace and Mattel Controversy

From the logical standpoint, the author succeeds in using logos and supporting his argument that Mattel's ways of destroying rainforests are unethical and should be opposed by the audience of the article. .
An important device the author uses to lend credibility to the article is ethos or the appeal to authority. Calling to authority is important in an article to convince the audience that others, potentially those are more credible than the author himself, is supporting the author's cause, and so the audience should, too. Keeping that in mind, the author invokes the names of well-known companies, organizations, and experts. As known by many environmental conservationists, the audience of this article, Greenpeace is an environmental organization that seeks to expose global environmental problems using creative methods. By using the organization's name in the title, the author hopes to grab attention from the audience, Greenpeace supporters, because when they see that the Greenpeace is supporting a cause, they will then feel the need to as well. To further the appeal to authority, the author uses quotations from a member of Greenpeace, Rolf Skar, who says that Greenpeace is "being silenced on Facebook." This statement serves to anger those environmental conservationists as their efforts are being unnoticed and even silenced. Thus, by using the appeal to authority, ethos, the author succeeds in his purpose of turning the audience to his side of supporting Greenpeace and denouncing the methods of companies such as Mattel for destroying Indonesian rainforests.
In order to create a distinct tone in the article, the author must use a distinct diction, or word choice. To reinforce that choice of words chosen by the author, he must then use parallelism to repeat the words and reiterate the purpose. Thus, diction, in combination with parallelism, helps set the negative tone towards those who support the destruction of the Indonesian rainforests.
