The Impact of Divorce on Children

The adolescent world is a more independent one, more separated and distant from parents, more self-sufficient, where friends have become favored companions, and where the major locus of one's social life now extends outside of family into a larger world of life experience"(Pickhardt).
Without this trust that is gain and shown by the parent to each other, the child will not know how to build trust with others. The early destruction of their trust can affect how they build relations with other in their adulthood. Friends can be harder to make for them and companionships will be tougher to build. .
False hope and beliefs can come into a child of lives and affect them greatly. For instance, when a family gets a divorce one parent will move out of the house. This can lead the child to thinking the parent that left no longer loves them and soon the other parent will do the same. This will eventually lead the child to wishfully think that one day their parents will love each other again and will be back together again. "He relies on wishful thinking to help allay the pain of loss, holding onto hope for a parental reunion much longer than does the adolescent who is quicker to accept the finality of this unwelcome family change"(Pickhardt). This wishful thinking is a defense mechanism that suppresses the truth from the child. Suppressing the truth and not accepting the truth can lead to problems in adulthood. The child that grows up to be an adult might grow up and deny everything that goes wrong in his life.
Depression from divorce usually does not start off as depression. The first few signs that can be seen are usually anger related.
"Depression is one of the more common reactions we see in children of divorce. Unfortunately, many parents entirely miss or misinterpret the signs of depression. It can take many forms, including behavior that is distancing, lethargic and withdraw.
