I realized that the pharmacists and techs have to deal with a lot of rude people. I saw how frustrating it can get but I watched how the pharmacists dealt with these kinds of issues in such a calm manor no matter how angry the customers got.
Andy described to me that the main role of a pharmacist is to dispense medicines to their patients according to the prescription given. But before that, they have to ensure that they delivering the right drug along with ensuring that the strength and dosage of the medicine is appropriate. Andy would also advise his patients in assuring the appropriate use of medications. For instance, he would tell the patient about the name of the drug, what it's for, when to take the drug, how many times per day, whether it should be taken before meals, after meals or with meals, the method of taking the drug and its side effects and possible drug-drug interactions. Pharmacists are highly educated in the form, uses, and interactions of certain medicines and also in how those medicines affect normal body functions, ensuring the patients well being. .
The pharmacy technicians at this pharmacy gave advice to patients on the proper use of medications. The majority of the duties of a pharmacy technician are to maintain, dispense, count, package, and carefully label medications for patients. When I observed pharmacy I noticed that the technicians are constantly on the phone speaking to doctors office and insurance companies, and that the fax machine is used very often in this pharmacy. The technicians would answer the phone by identifying themselves as a pharmacy technician.
