Lab Report - Calorie Content of Food

The primary purpose of this lab was to analyze the calorie content of various foods to test. Different food types had different amount of calories within them. This experiment allowed me to analyze the calorie content of food by constructing a basic calorimeter. The different food types that I measured were a form of nut, a marshmallow, and a food of my choice which was a potato chip. .
             Results.
Data Table 1 (Hands on Lab, 2016).
             Peanut Marshmallow Potato.

             Mass of the Water Only (g) 50.0 50.0 50.
Data Table 2 (Hands on Lab, 2016).
Food Item Description Peanut Marshmallow Chex Cracker .
             Mass of food, clamp, and cup – initial (g) 29.2 34.7 29.
             Mass of food, clamp, and cup – final (g) 28.1 34.0 28.7.
             Mass of Burned Fuel 1.1 0.7 0.3.
Observations of Flame Red flame, continuously tall Small red flame, burned for about 2 minutes Small red flame, had to reheat food to stimulate fire.
             Initial Water Temp (OC) 21.0 21.0 21.
             Final Water Temp (OC) 43.2 45.2 38.9.
             Change in Temp (OC) 22.2 24.2 17.9.
             Energy Released (kcal/g) 1.01 1.73 2.98.
             Energy Estimated on package (kcal/g) 4.8 3.2 3.9.
             Percent Difference (%) 79.0 45.9 23.6.
Determination of calories according to Atwater factors (kcal/g) 4.8 3.2 3.9.
             Calculations and Error.
             Energy Released Calculation (peanut).
             Energy (heat) = mcΔT = (50 g)(1 cal/g-C)(22.2 C)(1 kcal 1000 cal) = 1.11kcal.
             Calorie per gram (peanut).
(1.11 kcal) (1.1 grams of burned mass) = 1.01 kcal per gram.
             Percent Difference (peanut).
             (Theoretical – Actual) Theoretical x 100% = (4.8-1.01)/4.8 x 100% = 79.0%.
             Discussion and Conclusion.
In this experiment, my goal was trying to determine the amount of calories that certain types of food have. A calorie is defined as the amount of energy needed to raise 1 gram of water by 1 degree Celsius. For this experiment, I measured the calorie content of a peanut, a marshmallow and a Chex cracker. Of the three foods I tested, the Chex cracker had the highest amount of calories (2.
