Jo Ann recalls Charles having a "crazy look on his face" as he was attempting to pry open the house door. She was afraid for her life. Luckily for her, Charles' Aunt and Uncle came home to this scene. When they asked Jo Ann about what had happened, she responded by saying "Ask Charles." His story consisted of lies, saying that Jo Ann had attacked him and he was just trying to protect himself. They didn't believe him and disciplined young Charles Manson.4 .
Even though Charles always got punished at home, he never learned his lesson. From when he was young, Charles Manson was a frequent visitor of detention centers. He committed many petty crimes, but his favorite criminal activity was vehicle thefts. He appeared to enjoy being in detention centers. When his time was up for parole, he was found sodomizing another boy with a razor blade held to his throat, which would only increase the time he would spend inside detention centers. Charles was sent to a more secure location in Ohio due to his behavior. Surprisingly, Charles was released on parole due to good behavior at the age of 19 in 1954. Due to the terms and conditions of his parole, Charles Manson moved back in with his Aunt and Uncle in West Virginia. He later moved back in with his mother, also in West Virginia.
While he was on parole in West Virginia, he met a hospital waitress by the name of Rosalie Jean Willis. The next year, 1955, Charles Manson and Rosalie Jean Willis got married. He supported himself as well as his wife by having small-time jobs as well as going back to his usual criminal ways, stealing automotive vehicles. Rosalie Jean Willis ended up getting pregnant with Charles Manson's son. They decided to move to Los Angeles, California and drove there with a car that Charles Manson had stolen. The police caught him with the stolen car once he was already in California and was charged with taking the car past state lines, which is a federal offense.
