The only reason she stayed with Logan was because she was following her Nanny's orders. With her first dream of love and self-discovery destroyed her tone had changed. She no longer wanted to keep partaking in that part of her life. Shortly after, Janie meets a man named Jody Starks. They instantly hit it off and continued to see each other. A couple weeks later Jody told her that he would wait for her a little before sun up because he was leaving for Green Cove Springs that day and wanted her to come and be his wife. Later that night there was a conflict between Logan and Janie. Their argument reassured her to continue to follow her dreams of love and self-discovery.
Jody Starks married Janie at the very first opportunity they had and took her to a town where only a small population of black folks lived. She liked that Jody was financially stable but she also liked that she was able to look at him and not think that he was unattractive. Since Jody is a wealthy black man he had enough money to make their new town come alive. Folks within the town instantly made Jody the major because of all the money he had and all the new additions he made to the town. For instance, he added a store, a post office, and even light poles. Jody wanted Janie to run the store for him while he was out increasing control over the town and the others. People within their town began to characterize Janie as a beautiful woman. Jody began to notice how the other men within the town gawked at her and enjoyed her long beautiful hair. It forced him to become jealous and protective. He ordered her that "her hair was NOT going to show in the store" (Hurston, 55). Although Janie didn't like having to always put her hair up for work she did as she was told. When Jody became more familiar with the people within the town they started gathering outside of his big nice house for games of checkers and laughter. Unfortunately for Janie, Jody didn't let her join in on the games and gossip with others in the town.
