A Different Life: An Identification of Cultural Differences and Values

 

He attended a Catholic elementary school, public middle and high schools and a state college in West Africa. The local government sponsored education in most of the former French Colonies in West Africa. Most of his(interviewee) friends at home followed the same educational plan, and they all would study together at one of their parent's compounds(homes) after school. AB had the privilege of being able to graduate in West Africa with an advanced degree in Computer Programming and Data Analysis (DUTS Diplome Superieur pour Technicien Superieur en Informatique). .
             When arriving in the United States, he attended and graduated from Howard University, Washington, DC with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He states that he chose the field of Civil Engineering as a means to contribute to making the quality of life better for his family and to show how many people from developing countries can create a better quality of life for themselves. During his childhood in Mali, he saw firsthand that people struggled because of lack of infrastructure, this was also a big influence on him choosing Civil Engineering so that one day he will be able to help Mali and other developing countries. He states, "That any profession that positively affects the quality of life of communities is without a doubt a successful career field" and he is a proud member of The America Society of Civil Engineers. [ CITATION AB16 l 1033 ] He chose a career very different from his parents but still a successful field. His parents were both successful bankers and now retired in Paris, France. .
             When it comes to family AB states that family is his immediate and extended family, the village. AB believes that it is important for families to gather, so his family tries to meet gather on the weekends to eat and be merry. My interviewee works very hard to provide for his family and to contribute to social welfare.
