The Increase of Genetically Modified Foods (GMO)

This was the start of the GMO boom. The benefits for having GMO's is a larger increase in supply, which would serve the world's ever growing population, and it would decrease production time. In a 2012 article in USA Today as well in the New York Times article from June 2013, both articles discuss the economic efficiency for farmers and corporations. Nestle, General Mills and PepsiCo are a few examples of the several major corporations that have been shown to benefit from using genetically modified ingredients. (Forbes 2012) This goes to show the lack of consideration to the consumer and potential health concerns as the production process is geared more towards the farmers and corporations looking for larger yields. .

With the increased use of genetically modified foods by the producers, more and more of our everyday food has become genetically modified either through one ingredient or multiple ingredients. Today about three-fourths of our food on grocery store shelves are genetically modified/engineered (Forbes Magazine 2012). Yet, there is no mandatory regulation in place because corporations and farmers feel that the labeling will drive an increase in food cost. The FDA regulates a plethora of product categories, of which food and livestock are included on the list before it reaches the consumer, but none which stated the mandatory labeling of whether or not a product has been genetically altered. The FDA is there to protect the consumer, not the corporations that seek to profit from their products. And they are simply not doing their job. .
