Macbeth as a Tragic Hero

 

            The play entitled Macbeth written by William Shakespeare is a play of contradiction and ambition of the man called Macbeth. Driven to becoming King due to the three witches' prophecy, Macbeth kills all and any that get in his way. He puts his faith in the words and prophecies of three witches after the first one that he will become Thane of Cawdor aside from being the Thane of Glamis as well as going to be a king. Macbeth's wife, Lady Macbeth, is instrumental in pursuing Macbeth's ambition, egging him when his fear and cowardliness attacks him. Macbeth starts out as a good guy, a loyal friend to the king and a war hero until he succumbs to his pride and kills the King in order to become one. Macbeth of Shakespeare's Macbeth can be considered a tragic hero in the classical Greek sense. The first way that makes him a tragic hero is through his status and character. The second way that makes him a tragic hero is through his heroic attributes. The third way that makes him a tragic hero is through his tragic flaw. Finally, he is a tragic hero by the fatal consequences for himself and others.
             The first way that makes Macbeth a tragic hero is through his status and character. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth is told as the Thane of Glamis. One time, he and his friend Banquo are returning to Scotland after a fierce battle between the Norwegians and the Scottish. They have just won the war for the King Duncan. "For brave Macbeth- well he deserves that name, disdaining fortune, with his brandish'd steel, which smok'd with bloody execution" (I.II, 16-18). He is a great warrior that he can handle a sword like an extension of his body. He is a relentless and courageous fighter and would not stop until he wins. Macbeth fought bravely and through unbeatable odds against Macdonwald's army and for that, the king makes him as the Thane of Cawdor. .
             The second way that makes Macbeth a tragic hero is through his heroic attributes.
