Two Salt Lake Tribune reporters were fired after it became known that they had sold information to the Enquirer. The tabloid magazine reported that the Smart family was involved in a gay sex scandal and that there was porno material found throughout the home. The article alleged that this is what was to blame for Elizabeth's disappearance. The irony of this story is that the Tribune threatened legal actions against the Enquirer and they, in turn, demanded a retraction stating that the Trib had used "false and defamatory" statements in an article. The Smart family did all they could to recant the story that appeared in the July 2002 Enquirer. The Enquirer did offer an apology to the Smart family and printed a retraction. But, no lawsuit? Many celebreties have filed suits against the tabloids and won when the information was defaming, but the Smart's aren't going to file a lawsuit? Are they that pious that they can accept a simple thank you? I don't think so. I think that there was some truth to what was said or that they were afraid of something else getting out in the public so they decided to keep quiet. Their own spokesman said, "The Smart family is not a litigious family, but they will take action They are not going to sit idly by while their privacy is invaded and their good name is compromised." But they did just that.

This eludes to the question, "Was this whole thing staged so that Ed could realize political power and maybe cover-up the fact that his teenage daughter ranaway from their "safe" home?"
