South Texas is one of the 7 regions of the state of Texas. Some cities in this region include McAllen, Eagle Pass, Edinburg, Laredo, Cotulla and San Antonio. San Antonio is the largest city in South Texas and second largest in the entire state. South Texas geographically speaking lies roughly from San Antonio and expands southern towards the Rio Grande Valley, the southernmost tip of this region. To the east and west, South Texas's boundary is the Rio Grande which separates Mexico from the United States. A livestock ranching culture dominates the region. According to a 2010 census on this region the population of South Texas was estimated at 4.5 million residents, roughly 18% of the state population. The Population is heavily dominated by Hispanics, 68.9% of the population is Hispanic followed by non-Hispanic whites at 25.2% and lastly 3.9% African American.
The Terrain of South Texas is predominantly flat, laying on the coastal plain. The Rio Grande Valley has fertile soils and is rich in the production of citrus fruits. Western and Central parts of South Texas consist of numerous mesquite trees and crop fields. The climate in South Texas is overall Steppe Climate. Very Hot and dry summers and not so cold winters. Average summer temperatures in this region is 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Precipitation is usually seen during summer months in this region. Tornadoes do occur in this region but not as frequent as other parts of the state. They approach from the northwest and makes their southeast as severe thunderstorms. .
South Texas is predominantly Hispanic and a heavily Roman Catholic region. Most households speak Spanish as a primary language and it is also the most democratic section of Texas. South Texas has a relatively young population with 40% of the population being younger than 25 years of age. South Texas is a less educated region compared to the rest of the state. 74% of the population 25 and older have a high school diploma but only 20% have a bachelor's degree or higher.
