The Benefits and Genetically Modified Foods

As the saying goes "you are what you eat" and thus eating healthy and nutritious food is important in our daily life. However, a debate has been raised as more and more genetically modified food enters the market, as concerning the safety of genetically modified foods. Those who oppose GM foods argue that they are unsafe, but on the other hand, people who advocate GM foods, suggest that they are safe and beneficial to humans. As for my family, my mom used to be one of those people who were against buying GM foods and instead would buy organic foods, until recently. My mom read an article that said scientists have revealed GM crops are no riskier than consuming the same foods containing ingredients from crop plants modified by conventional plant improvement techniques (White). As far as I'm concerned, GM foods can promote the quality of our eating by improving the tastes, keeping time, nutritional value, and productivity. .
"Genetically engineered foods have had foreign genes (genes from other plants or animals) inserted into their genetic codes" (Genetically Engineered Foods). GM foods are created when the scientists target specific DNA and extract it from species A and then injected it into species B, which gives species B the desired trait inherited from species A. According to the article written by Joan McDaniel, "the first genetically modified foods for commercial sale began in 1994, when Calgene first marketed its delayed ripening tomato (McDaniel)". Due to the genetic engineering, scientists can combine the genes from different organisms, and make crops which are more beneficial to humans. In this paper, I'm going to clarify the four improvements in eating thanks to GM foods: 1. It makes the food more tasty 2. It keeps the fruits or vegetables fresh longer 3. It promotes people's health as the result of better nutrition 4. It also increases the yields which thus makes the food cheaper.
