This shows signs of selflessness because Peeta does not want to kill Katniss and would rather kill himself and let her win. Surely, emotional sacrifice is only one form of sacrifice which can make people perform selfless acts for the ones they love.
Emotional sacrifice is not the only sacrifice in the novel. Peeta and Katniss show forms of physical sacrifice also. Firstly, Peeta shows physical sacrifice by letting Katniss get away from Cato and injures himself in the process. When he sees Katniss before the arrival of Cato, he asks her '"what are you still doing here' 'Run! He screams. Run! '" (193). This proves that Peeta is willing to let Katniss go and cares about her all along. By joining the alliance, he tries to protect her while knowing that the consequences would be deadly if the career tributes find out. .
Secondly, Katniss sacrifices her hearing to destroy the career tributes food supply hoping to kill them by starvation. After blowing up their supplies, she states, "the ground shakes with explosions. I can't hear them. I can't hear anything at the moment." (22). This not only helped her but other tributes as well by cutting the careers food supply, it would give other tributes a better chance for survival and sacrifices her ear in the process. It is an act of selflessness because she blows up the food supply knowing that it will not only help her but Rue as well. Thirdly, Katniss sacrifices her body to kill the careers by dropping a tracker jackers nest on them and gets stung in the process." I'll have to saw off the branch at the trunk and send the whole thing down" (186) as stated by Katniss. This shows sacrifices Katniss is willing to take the chance to kill the careers that are killing other tributes by forming an alliance. Therefore, Katniss and Peeta perform many selfless emotional acts and show another way to act selflessly which can inspire others to act the same.
