The Benefits of Obtaining a Liberal Arts Degree

             Cause.
In a time where price tags are rising, lowering graduation rates and the dimming of job prospects. Parents and students and even politician are debating whether a degree in liberal arts is worth the money and time spent on earning that degree. Not to mention that liberal arts grads have a higher unemployment rate than grads in another field initially out of college. .
President Obama is one of the most modern politicians to argue that. "A lot of young people no longer see the trades and skilled manufacturing as a viable career. But I promise you, folks can make a lot more, potentially, with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art history degree." (Obama, 2014). I understand where he comes of saying this, but that doesn't mean you won't be successful if you do choose to graduate with a liberal arts degree, in fact, many people with a liberal arts degree earn close to $2,000 more Later in their career than others with specialized degrees (Johnson, 2014). Public opinion will tell you liberal arts are becoming worthless when finding a job coming out of college but little does everyone know the broad range of skills that you learn is becoming essential with the recent economic situation.
             .
             Effect.
A liberal arts degree is an asset; a study found that employers are looking for a broad range of skill sets more than a particular level. "93% of companies felt that the ability to think critically, communicate and to be a problem solver was more important than an undergraduate major" (CLAS, 2014). They were also looking for people who are innovative and creative. The fact is liberal arts degrees provides a solid base on which any individual can build upon. In my opinion, the problem is students who graduate with this degree don't know how to market themselves and the skills they learned. Learning the skills doesn't automatically mean that these future job searchers know how to translate that ability onto a resume.
