History and Identity of the Zulu People

One element that has certainly influenced the identity of the young Zulu people was government institutions. As discussed in Timothy Parsons, Chapter 29, "Undivided loyalties" scouting has had a huge influence on the identity of young Zulu boys. Scouting and Inkatha worked together to teach discipline to young boys in Africa. It also offered a more effective means of reaching and controlling Zulu students. The scouting movement presented a measure of rightfulness and self-pride for African boys who faced minimal existence during the apartheid era. One of the main leaders of the scouts was Baden-Powell. His celebration of Zulu culture and identity linked with the scouting world had a positive effect on the popularity of scouts to the Zulu people. People believed Powell had a cultural view on race rather than a biological view (344). He considered AmaZulu people to really be white men at heart and wanted to incorporate Zulu culture into the scouting movement (345). Powell used a bunch of different Zulu ideas and concepts to unite Zulu boys with the scouting world. By the mid 1970's Zulu boys dominated SASA's African sub-association. Due to the high number of young Zulu boys incorporated in scouting the KwaZulu education department wanted to include the scouting philosophy into the official school syllabus. This did not work out well and in 1980 there was a national school boycott. Scouting offered an outlet for young boys to express themselves and learn more about their Zulu elders and the identity of their culture. (Carton, Benedict. "Ch. 29 Timothy Parsons "Undivided Loyalties"" In Zulu Identities: Being Zulu, past and Present. New York: Columbia University Press, 2009.).
Another factor that has had a huge impact on the rise and fall of the Zulu kingdom is entertainment. In "An Assembly of Readers" by Holnipha Mokoena he writes about the story of an author named Fuze.
