Film Summary - The Third Man

.
The declining belief in morality, results in individuals struggling to seek goodness in themselves. This is exacerbated by the xenophobic tendencies of society following the war. The opening montage of the city divided into 4 zones in conjunction with the voice over 'All of them strangers to the place' underscores the notion of isolation that comes with the foreignness of post-war Vienna. Holly Martins is portrayed as an outsider as evident in the close up of Holly in the scene where the land lady and Anna are communicating. His facial expression conveys that language acts a barrier between the characters and a sense of detachment. A symbol of alienation is Anna who doesn't connect emotionally. This is shown through the detached manner of fact tone 'Sometimes I wondered 100 times if it was an accident'. The lack of emotion and grief on Anna's face positions the responder to perceive that individuals are hiding in their own world and have acknowledged the indifference of others. .
Consequently humanity has been reduced to a meaningless life succumbing to the notion that immorality will prevail. The medium shot of Harry which shows his emotions in the dialogue 'Nobody thinks in terms of human being' conveys the lack of compassion in humanity, nonchalance and implies that values have been subverted. Further enhancing this notion is the high angle of individuals standing under the Ferris wheel where Harry references humans as 'dots'. Here humanity has been dehumanised into "dots" highlighting the insignificance of individual life by employing a highly cynical tone. This in turn positions the viewers to realise that individuals do not care about mankind and how they are treated as immaterial. This is further supported by Holly's immoral actions as reflected in the harsh white light hospital environment. Holly's blank facial expression conveys his shock at the villainous acts of Harry.
