Little things such as the air conditioning and the overall aesthetic appeal make it a more attractive place to be especially for the girls. "War just feels older at outdated and it's not a big deal but there's no air conditioning. It's just when I'm working out I need AC," says Ipshita Bose a Virginia Tech freshman, "I feel like when girls go to workout they need a nice place and it has to look pretty and not outdated and stuff and guys don't really care as much." Grant Moore, a Hokie that works out at both War Memorial Hall and McComas, furthers this idea when he says "Some people prefer war over McComas due to the environment, some people prefer the more manly rustic type of look war gives while others prefer the more modern McComas look but I think the rustic environment at war can be intimidating for some girls." McComas is ultimately a very open and airy facility with natural light streaming through the building windows and the more pleasant and welcoming environment at McComas compared to its counterpart War Memorial Hall tends to attract a larger crowd of people, especially girls. .
McComas, unlike Virginia Tech's other gym facility, War Memorial Hall, is also more welcoming and has a large variety of machines that meet the needs of both genders. McComas' weight room which consists of multiple rooms packed full to the brim with weight machines, free weights, benches and extremely buff men flashing off their biceps is a perfect place for guys trying to complete a few sets of bench presses but also for girls who might find most other weight rooms a little bit intimidating. "My favorite thing about McComas is their variety of equipment and amount of workout equipment they have so that you often don't have to wait to long for what machine you are looking for." Grant Moore states when describing the facility. The gym not only has a large variety of different types of weights but has so many of the same kind which saves people from wasting their time by waiting around for other people to finish their sets before they can start their own.
