He believed that, "The bomb will shorten the of war, in order to save the lives of thousands and thousands of young Americans."( Walker 93). Numbers of American lives lost in the battle of Iwo Jima was 20,000, in the battle of Okinawa 41, 700 but the casualty rate of civilians and soldiers for America was 418,500. August 9, 1945 was when another atomic bomb, "Fat Man", was dropped on Nagasaki because Japan failed to surrender after the first atomic bomb and it was estimated that 39,000 civilians were killed (Lewis 11).
The war was going to end anyway, but the amount of deaths was high from the use of the atomic bombs. Almost 150,000 civilians were killed as a result of the attack of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Walker 46). The use of the atomic bombs was unethical and immoral as it created a new meaning of total war by killing thousands of civilians, the casualty rate of civilians and soldiers is about 2,600,000-3,100,000 ( Walker 46). A survivor described the damage to people saying, "The appearance of people was well, they all had skin blackened by burns they had no hair because their hair was burned, and at a glance you couldn't tell whether you were looking at them from in front or in back they held their arms bent [forward] like this and their skin- not only on their hands, but on their faces and bodies too- hung down if there had been only one or two such people perhaps I would not have had such a strong impression." (Langley 29). Many survivors suffered from the deaths of their loved ones and they could not believe what had actually happen to the innocent civilians.
Truman warned the Japanese to surrender but by the Japanese not surrendering it caused a lot of deaths for the Japanese citizens. By warning the Japanese, Truman wanted to prevent an invasion. He negotiated to ending the war with the Potsdam Declaration, defining the "unconditional surrender" and clarifying what it meant for the position of the emperor (Walker 104).
