My Experience with Acne and Acutane

When first walking into the dermatologist office, I was nervous. Looking at my skin, wondering if there's even a way to get rid of my acne. When the doctor first took a look at my acne he said it was a rare case. As the only option I had to help my skin was Accutane, which is a powerful drug used in the treatment of acne. The end diagnosis was a severe case of acne, and I was put on Accutane for several months. This drug took me on a very bumpy road and changed my life forever. .
When I started to take Accutane I was in 10th grade at a public high school. Like any high school kid, I wanted to have perfect skin, but some of us aren't so lucky. High school has many challenges for students, one of mine being on the baseball team and keeping up with all of the other players in this challenging sport. The doctor said to be very careful about getting dirt on my skin and try to keep it out of the sun as much as possible. My response to him was that I'll try my best, because baseball is very competitive and if I have to get dirty on a play to better the chance for my team to win, then I will get dirty. As for the sun, I had to put a strong sun block lotion on every time I was outside because of my fair skin. Following the doctors directions on Accutane were simple at first, until I started to have severe side effects a month later.
As I continued to take Accutane a month later I hit a few speed bumps. I happened to get severe side effects from Accutane that made my life somewhat frustrating and difficult. One of the side effects I had was tenderness of the bones. The doctor said this happens with most of their patients, but not like me. My bones were so fragile that one morning when I woke up to go to school I got out of bed and immediately fell to the floor. My legs felt weak for about a full month. There was no way I was going to play baseball at the time when I could barely walk. I had to buy a walking cane for school to help me get around as my bones gradually got better.
