The researchers then chose a descriptive random systematic sample of 300 Alexandra residents. The residents were aged between 15-40 years old and were chosen randomly from a randomly selected staring point along 5 routes every tenth dwelling was visited over a period of two weekends (4 days)(page 17). The sampling method chosen the first time was not appropriate because the participants were reluctant to participate, but the second time the researchers were successful and the participants were on board with the research.
The researchers collected data by interviewing the participants in two stages; the first stage was conducted by issuing and pre test questionnaire and by leaving the comic for the participants to read. There after an appointment was made to conduct the second interview, which was conducted seven days after the initial visit. During the second stage the interview was conducted by a different person to avoid repeat bias. Questions were only asked to participants who had read the comic, which is logical. Those who did not read the comic, did not get interviewed and the questions from the previous stage were added on. The interviews were held in the home environment of the participants and the questionnaire that was given was written in English and then translated to the participants preferred language. The researchers were thorough when ensuring that all participants gave their consent before the research and were asked while being interviewed. The fist attempt at data collection was not appropriate because the patients that were chosen were nervous already under pressure being at the clinic and did not need the added strain of participating in this research. The second attempt however proved to be successful and more appropriate. This is because the participants were not in a stressful environment; they were at home and comfortable. The researchers analysed their data by breaking it into different categories.
