Specifically, it causes damage to the protective myelin sheath that surrounds nerve cells. When a nerve is damaged, signals can slow down or even stop. Nerve damage is caused by inflammation that occurs when the body's immune system attacks its own nervous system. A definitive diagnosis is made when there is evidence of two or more lesions in the spinal column or brain that are discovered on an MRI. These lesions form as scar tissue due to demyelination caused by the body's attack on the myelin sheath surrounding nerve cells.
