Peace Keeping Troops

 

The guidelines also state that mediation and negotiations are basic tools to be used by peacekeepers at all levels of the chain of command. Effective negotiation allows for dispute resolution without resorting to the use of force or violence. The UN guidelines suggest that negotiation training for soldiers "adopt a lecture format covering such areas as tact, diplomacy, and the three Fs of peacekeeping firm, fair, and friendly" (Clark 2). It also recommends that negotiation exercises be incorporated into training drills so that troops can become more familiar with the act of negotiating. They accomplish these tasks by being skilled patient, and by being firm so that they are able to resolve the conflict as promptly as possible and without any problems.
             Intervention by troops is important because the innocent villagers view them, as a type of "savior" (Clark 4). Hopefully, the community will put pressure on the conflicting sides to halt the fighting so that the country can return to normal. Also, putting into effect alliances and starting new ones with near by at peace countries helps to end present feuding and avoid future problems. Having soldiers skilled in creating diplomatic treaties allows conflicts to be extinguished sooner (Fabian 223). For the most part, soldiers work to exceed the goal of preserving peace and skillfully utilize all resources to end the hostility.
             Peacekeepers face a multitude of dilemmas within a third world country that could inhibit their mission. To illustrate, occasionally the feuding countries view peacekeepers as an interference rather than an assistance, because troops are sent over to solve a problem that the country itself could not solve on their own. Resulting in the country feeling vulnerable and threatened. Thus, intervention could cause more harm than good and may cause more chaos within the country causing the countries to feel intimidated.
