This was known as the UN Partition Plan. However, the UN Partition plan did not solve the problem. A war broke out known as the 1947-1949 War, where the Palestinian armies were outnumbered by the Jewish armies usually a two to three ratio. The most important thing to note during this conflict is that the Palestinians did not invade Israel. The Palestinians only retaliated when the Israeli forces committed sixteen massacres against their people, including a massacre that killed over 100 men, women, and children at Deir Yassin. Menachem Begin, who was the head of the Jewish terrorist groups called the ordeal at Deir Yassin to be "splendid". Menachem Begin would be a future Prime Minister of Israel. As the war came to a close, Israel conquered seventy-eight percent of Palestine, which consequently caused three-quarters of a million Palestinians to be made refugees and by the end of the war, five-hundred towns had been destroyed, and a new map was drawn up. Everything was renamed and given a Hebrew name. However, Israel was not done conquering land that did not belong to them. In 1967 Israel launched an exceedingly successful attack on Egypt, which followed the "Six Day War". During this time period, Israel acquired the last twenty-two percent of Palestine (West Bank and the Gaza Strip). Israel broke the international law when they acquired the Palestinians territory by war. It is impermissible for Israel to take land that did not belong to them. The territories were also a part of Egypt (returned) and Syria (under occupation). On the other hand, Israel attacked a US Naval ship named the USS Liberty, this attack killed and injured over 200 American servicemen. Lyndon Johnson, who was president at this time dismissed rescue flights, stating that he did not want to "embarrass an ally." (IfAmericansKnew). However, there were people who saw this as an attack, provoking a war against the United States, like Thomas Moorer, who was a Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
