The Road to Success

It's just a matter of who is hiring you. Some people may feel obligated to hire a recommended prospective employee; however, others may feel that person with more experience is more deserving of the job. However, in Maria Dimera's essay, "A College Degree is a Worthy Achievement," Dimera argues that any college degree will help you in the long run. She explains that people with a degree are less likely to be laid off than a person without a college level education. This applies to me because I feel that it is imperative for me to receive an education in order to succeed in life. Dimera believes, "[A college diploma is] the ticket one's desired field and higher pay" (260). The essence of Maria's argument is that students should pursue a degree because the learning experience you gain during college is valuable in any field of work. .
For example, I want to obtain a Bachelor's in Vocal Performance (Classical/Operatic) at USC. Because USC is stereotypically known as a school with wealthy students who most likely know wealthy people, I feel that going there will help me gain connections with people who are already in the music industry. Since the music industry is a very competitive working environment, it's important for me to always stay on top of my game (meeting new people). These connections will help further or accomplish my goals. Another example would be joining Greek life. While at USC, I do plan on pledging into a sorority. By doing so, I'm expanding my social circle wider. This social circle may have even further connections. Therefore, these connections can help me achieve my aspirations much more efficiently than if I didn't know these people. It will help ensure success in my future in the long run because I'll make acquaintanceship with many people whose relationship with me can only expand. I'm broadening my social circle just by attending college. Just like Dimera is arguing, my time in college is valuable to my future.
