Will is also constantly in trouble with the law; he once chased down and beat a man named Carmine Scarpaglia who he claimed used to beat him up in kindergarten. During the brawl, Will hit a police officer that was responding to the scene and was subsequently put in jail. .
SIGMUND FREUD:.
Sigmund Freud was born in Freiberg, on May 6, 1856 and was a neurologist best known for developing the theories and techniques of psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is a method through which an analyst unpacks unconscious conflicts based on the free associations, dreams and fantasies of the patient. His theories on child sexuality, libido and the ego, among other topics, were some of the most influential academic concepts of the 20th century (Biography.com). A great deal of the therapy that Will undergoes is psychoanalytic as he is a perfect example of the magnitude of influence childhood experiences can have on the development of an adult personality. Although his unconscious conflicts are not overtly psychosexual, he does, as an adult, present an apparent fixation in the oral and phallic stages of psychosexual development. His 'abnormal family set up' or movement through various foster homes caused him to remain in the phallic stage because he developed a sense of anxiety over his own perceived inadequacy as he came to associate his foster-fathers abusive nature with his own self worth. According to Freud, Wills aggressive nature and fear of abandonment stems from a fixation in the oral stage that can also be linked to the fact that being orphaned, as an infant would have meant that he was forcefully/abruptly weaned from breastfeeding – an important part of infant development (Simply Psychology). Will describes his abuse at the hands of his foster father in great detail while in therapy with Sean. He claims that his foster father used to lie out a stick, a belt, and a wrench and allow Will to choose the instrument he would be beaten with.
