While Hester is standing on the scaffold alone and withstanding the abuse of others. He, however, stands on the bleacher and watches this. Even he persuades her: "Be not silent from any mistaken pity for him; for, believe me, Hester, though he were step down from a high place, and stand here beside thee, on the pedestal of shame.what can thy silence do for him, except.to add hypocrisy."(62). It is obvious that he is enveloped in the trust and worship of all the people. Because of his status and position, he is afraid to speak out the fact by himself. All of his devot words to Hester are in order to hide his sin and retain his reputation. He deceives all the people, but he is still a sublime and respectable pastor, this is not only irresponsible to Hester but also the public.
Dimmesdale' life and career is better and better. He has to confess himself at night to get release from his sin. He meets Hester and Pearl. When Pearl asks him: "wilt thou stand here with mother and me, to-morrow noontide"(142)? He replies: "Not so, my child. I shall, indeed, stand with thy mother and thee one other day, but not tomorrow"(143)! His repose conveys that he does not know when he can stand with them and admit his sin. He is still shirking to face doing that. He just want to put this off continuously. He has never considered Hester's feeling and how she suffered from the society. His recreance and reputation which is more and more high, reduce his love to Hester.
Dimmesdale's sin torment him constantly. It makes him never get a peace from his sin for seven years. However. He punishes himself, but never cares about Hester and Pearl. When he meets Pearl in the stream, he says to Hester: " that this dear child, tripping about always at the side, hath caused many an alarm?.that my own features were partly repeated in her face, and so strikingly that the world might see them! But she is mostly thine"(195)! It is observed that he is so focus on his sin and frightened deeply by Pearl that he is not able to contact with Hester and be responsible to Pearl as a father.
