These slaves were used to lift and transport heavy material that usually require a machine or truck now a days. These slaves carried quarry stones for the Colosseum from the quarry at Tivoli 17 miles away from the work site. In addition to the slaves that were used to build the Colosseum the materials for construction used was just important. The invention of concrete called pozzolana made it possible for the construction of the Colosseum and other structures in Rome. Concrete was such a new invention to Romans that they did not even know if this concrete would hold or even last. The Romans made this concrete by mixing lime and volcanic rock to form mortar. (Ching, 2011) The ingredients used to make this concrete was a success because even with military wars and natural disasters the structure still stands. The great invention of concrete made it possible for the arches used in the Colosseum. These arches were much stronger that a flat ceiling. With the use of concrete and the vaulted arches, it was possible to use a lot of weight and build many levels. The Colosseum has three levels with 80 arches in each level, and also the Colosseum has 240 arches total. (Coarelli, 2001) The seats were similar to the way construction is done today. The seats were made in a workshop and then brought to the Colosseum to be fitted. This kind of construction is very similar to how a sports venue is built today. The stairs were also built like the way the seat were. Other material that were used to make this construction happen were tiles for the floor, bricks for the walls, marble, metal, wood, and pipes that were made out of lead for the sewer system. After the construction was completed the entertainment was ready to begin. .
Once the Colosseum was completed emperors used this newly built Colosseum for "Bread and circuses". This phrase was used because the citizens of Rome received free entertainment for a day or sometime 3 days straight.
