The major problems associated with this disorder occur in social and occupational functioning. Although I do not believe that I have AvDP, I do believe that I have suffered from a form of social anxiety that has, at times, hindered me in my life. I have experience low self-esteem and feelings of inadequacy which has caused me to avoid pursuing a college education. Avoidant behaviors have adversely affected my occupational functioning because I have avoided social situations that could have been important for the job or for advancement with my employer. I am very good at my job but end up "stuck" in positions because of the fear of change and not being capable enough and or educated enough. When I thought about returning to school, I filled out FAFSA forms for six years before I actually decided to go back to school.
