For example if women are self conscious about their body weight they can either exercise or maintain a healthy lifestyle or go under the knife, and have a possibility of harming their body, Women would go through the extremes knowingly they can harm themselves. According to Stice and Wolf explained, "men's beauty standards are not as extreme or unattainable as women's beauty standards"(pg4). Men are less likely to care about beauty as many women are; men are not easily influenced concerning beauty.
In order for the anthropologists to see if beauty is easily influenced they used different methods to see if it was true. They were able to do a study in a University and surveyed majority of the female university students. They surveyed them what does beauty mean to them and separated into different categories. Chiu, Hong and Dwek explained "we selected the phrase "Natural beauty" because we felt it best represented a person's true beauty."(Pg5) They did not wanted to use other terms that would affect the study. They wanted the women to think of " Natural beauty" compared to "body image" because they think it would alter the women's responses by the end of their first study they came the conclusion that majority of women did not think that beauty is easily influenced depending on their appearances. .
The first study they only included a woman's perspective, but the second study they included a male's perspective as well whether to see if males felt the same way about beauty than women. Since women feel more pressure by the media to be beautiful they have more concern about their appearance than males. They made a control group and a malleable group by splitting majority of the people in half. Male and female read quotes from different articles based on beauty. The result of the study was that women had more anxiety about their appearance than men.
