Don Quixote of La Mancha

 

            The son of a deaf surgeon, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was a Spanish novelist, soldier and poet, born in 1547 and died in 1616. Miguel achieved literary success in his later years when he published the first part of Don Quixote in 1605. He is considered to be the maximum figure of Spanish literature and the father of modern novel. He is known world-wide for writing Don Quixote which has been described as the first modern novel and one of the best works of world literature. Don Quixote is the second most edited and translated book in history, the first one is the Bible. This book is still popular and read by many 400 years later. The book is known mainly for two reasons, it's had a very large amount of readers and second because even if someone hasn't read it they will have heard of the character Don Quixote. This novel is a clear example of World Literature. Everyone around the world knows it and it's had a great impact on society, on the one hand, he makes you laugh because he is antiquated and a very odd man. On the other hand he always sticks to his aim no matter how many times he fails. .
             The main character in this novel is Don Quixote, he's around 50 years old from La Mancha (Spain), and he's always in company of a laborer named Sancho Panza who rides his mule which he loves deeply, named Rucio. He will always be riding his horse Rocinante who is of an extremely old age. After reading many knight themed books he decides to dress up as one ride the roads of Spain with his two companions in search of glory and grand adventure, his aim throughout this adventure is to "go around the world with his weapons and horse to find adventures, and putting in all that he had read that the knights did, getting rid of all kinds of grievance and putting themselves in danger occasions when, finishing them, he will gain eternal name and fame"(Chap. 1).
             Following the tradition of knights, Don Quixote assigns himself to Dulcinea del Toboso, she's an imagined figure which is like his "princess", his vision of the perfect woman for him, "For what I want of Dulcinea del Toboso, she's every bit as good as the noblest princess on earth.
