11). The two-state solution calls for an Independent state of palestine alongside the State of Israel. And so there would be two states for two groups of people. Similarly to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, "Gandhi believed that to achieve genuine freedom Indians must overcome their debilitating fear and awe of British rule" (Gandhi p. 13). The idea is that Israelis and Palestinians want to run their own states differently; Israelis want a Jewish state, and Palestinians wants a Palestinian one. Because neither side can get what it wants in a joined state, the only possible solution that satisfies everyone is separating Palestinians and Israelis. And only through two Independent states can a solution be constructed, "What mattered most to Gandhi was how swaraj (freedom) could be connected to a whole nexus of other concepts, but especially to satyagraha, his idea of nonviolent power and truth" (Gandhi p. 11).The weakness in Gandhi's ideology however, is that, judging from our past, a peaceful resistance is bound to fail. Many Palestinians are in favor of the non-violent revolution, however, they are afraid of the fallout. They fear that this might make them look weak. And if the two-state solution was to follow through, it is likely that the Palestinian state would undermine the State of Israel, resulting in some kind of confrontation. It is not the independence of the Palestinian State that the Israelis are opposed to, it is the independence of a Jewish state. And this would result in war. However even though the peaceful protest is bound to fail, so is the violent one. Also, Gandhi did not extenuate violence on all levels. He did justify it on circumstantial grounds. He positively advocated it if, in the face of an injustice, the only other options were to surrender or retreat. This is why he was in favor of the right to bear arms even though he was anti-violence. In taking Gandhi's approach, it will be made clear to Hamas and the Palestinians that by continuing the violence, it will only continue to kill the women and the children of their homeland.
