Then one day, a nun asked Esperanza "where do you live?" Esperanza pointed to the third floor and said "there" the nun said "you live there?" Esperanza felt like "nothing" and then she realized she wanted a house she can point to without feeling ashamed without receiving a negative reaction by the nun. But the house on Mango Street isn't the house she can point to because it's sad, falling apart and very old.
             For "Simply Maria or The American Dream," Maria and her family emigrated from Mexico to the United States. However, Maria experiences trouble when decides to follow her dreams and goals in life since her parents are old-fashioned. So they want her to just stay home and not talk to any guys. They want her to live like the traditional Hispanic old- fashion girls by cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the responsibilities of the children and attending her husband and father. But Maria wants to attend college to become an actress, yet her father says she's studying to become a whore. So her parents want Maria to become a secretary, but she wants to attend college especially after receiving a scholarship.
             "Gifted Hands" depicts the story of Ben Carson as he struggled in school at first because he was unable to earn good grades. As a child, he was bullied by other classmates because he seemed stupid and because he was the only African American. Later, Ben received reading glasses and his grades dramatically improved. His mom wanted what was best for her boys, so she cut off TV time. Then they spent time going to the library, reading books, and then writing a report on what they read. Although his mom was unable to read or write, she still helped her boys with homework by encouraging them to do their best. Ben's mother was a foster child who married at age 14 to a man who later married another woman. Then she left him because she knew she could raise her boys better by herself.
