One Day of Life by Manilo Argueta

 .
The landowners in this novel practice abuse amongst the natives. They are brainwashed into thinking they are defending against communism amongst the natives that live there or "enemies". The wealthy in central America are provided with education, opportunities and fed well. They view the natives as communist when in actuality they are just trying to band together to protect themselves against the harsh treatment, lack of food and healthcare they have brought upon them. "One must be ready to defend the country against its enemies even at the expense of our own brothers" This is an example of the mindset of these officials. They are trained killers armed with combat skills of Chine's martial arts as well as the knowledge of psychology in order to make the people suffer by use of words and self hate. .
There are two different mindsets presents amongst the authorities and the natives. The natives are uniting because they are caught in an endless cycle of slavery, The landowners don't give them enough money and subsequently find different methods of taking the money back. The authorities are brainwashed into thinking the natives are trying to harm their lives and religion that they feel obligated to defend against their cruelty. Its an endless cycle that must be combated. Chepe , Lupe's husband is the leader of the community is killed in the novel. This is an example of their cruelty . Not only do they kill the men but they beat the women as well as rape them, It forces one with the perspective of both sides to question the behavior of these authorities. Killing is unacceptable in any aspect but understandable amongst humans because we as a species try to justify unjust behavior since the beginning of time. The problem is propelled ten fold when savage practices such as , rap , is introduced and it makes you wonder who the real "enemy" is. .
A commendable aspect of the natives in the communities is their approach towards rectifying the wrongs done to them.
