The Godfather - An Offer He Couldn't Refuse...

The viewers see him acknowledging the word of god at the same time his men are taking lives. He is allowing his new family to be corrupted by violence from the very start. It is by this move that we as viewers understand how different Michael is from his father. His family values seem non-existent as he willingly places this defenseless child in harms way. He is seen renouncing Satan then the shot immediately cuts to the brutal murders of the Mafia heads. .
The irony present in this scene is quite blatant. Taking the life of another is about as non-Christian as one can get, yet we see Michael participating in one of the most holy rituals in the Christian religion. The fact that he is capable of such atrocity and yet able, for the time being, to keep it under wraps, speaks volumes on his power of deception. Also, his lack of adaptation of the Christian morals reaffirms the suspicion of insincerity. Music and sound effects in film are a huge factor in the viewer experience. Music can set the tone (no pun intended) and mood of a scene. This is achieved through genre selection, volume and cohesively partnering with the video. The music in the baptism scene is that of an organ, which is quite appropriate considering they are in a church. The organ music is then coupled with the vocals of the church official and conveys a very dark mood. The echoing of the priests voice increases the suspense of the events soon to come. This is an example of how music can be used to foreshadow happenings. There are several pauses in the music as all attention is drawn to Michael's hypocritical responses to the priest's inquiries. The volume and intensity of the organ increase as the murders ensue and the baptism nears completion. The loud dramatic organ music successfully accompanies the lurid bursts of gunfire as the Mafia heads are ruthlessly slain by Michael's men. At times of less intensity the organ delivers a somber feeling almost as if the angels are mourning the savage spilling of human blood.
