The Double Life of Oedipus

 

            What is the meaning of a double life? Many people have different approaches to meaning of a double life. Some would say that anyone who has a double life would be conscious of such a thing. While that could be true, in Oedipus Rex, Oedipus initially believes he was meant to be who he is at the beginning; a self confident and strong leader who is obnoxious. Yet as hard times reached him when he goes on a search for the killer of Laius, he can't help but realize his true nature. He comes upon a fearful truth in which involves him having a double life which he did not know about, as well as causing him to deny being the killer, which then forms an intellectual blindness on him, for he sees only want he wants. Yet what he sees is merely anything but the truth behind his existence. .
             As Oedipus is gifted with the kingdom of Thebes, a major problem occurred and it was up to Oedipus to help relieve the major crises in his now kingdom. At the start of the play we see an Oedipus of great stature, a king who is loved by his people and most of all respected. Oedipus first life is depicted as nice and gracious, he has a strong desire to help his people bring back Thebes to peace. As the attention that Thebes is in terrible shape is brought to Oedipus, he becomes the heart warming and gentle creature whom tries to bring calm to his people. The very same people that praised him for being the clever person because he solved the riddle to saved Thebes. This allows Oedipus to have a good view of him, thinking he has no ability to hurt anyone, specially his Love ones. .
             Oedipus life is not what he believes, and is not what he imagines, but as the play runs its course, the death of former king Laius brings many questions to now beloved King Oedipus. As Oedipus is told the only solution for a save Thebes was finding the killer, he bows to bring the killer. As of that moment Oedipus had created his faith, one where it will help him answer all his questions.
