Iliad Character Analysis - Hector

"Iliad" – one of the oldest surviving monuments of ancient Greek literature, the epic poem attributed to Homer. Illiad describes the events of the Trojan War; mainly the siege of the Troy, death and glory of main characters. One of the main characters is Hector, in Greek legend; he is the chief warrior of the Trojan army. Overall Hector is represented as a character that mostly leaves positive feedback on its readers. He is a caring father and husband, good warrior and good image of his country, Homer actually seem to have sympathy towards Hector's character. Hector shows philates (love, mercy) to his people and family, but his hubris (pride) leads him to face his moira (fate). His obedience to Trojans mostly develops sympathy towards him but some poor choices he makes throughout the war causes him to be a very tragic character. .
Hector throughout the poem really caring for his people and his family. Hectors philates and respect to his people really well described and shown in Book 6. He feels really responsible for standing out and protecting his city. Hectors patriotism is overwhelming and his feeling of duty makes him forcefully incredulous of those who he thinks aren't pulling their own weight at the war for the benefit of the Trojans. Hector blames his brother Paris of not being responsible for the war that was actually caused by his fault; he blames the man's lack of spirit and preference for lovemaking over military duty. "May the earth swallow him where he stands! The Olympian has raised him to be a pain to the Trojans and to big-hearted Priam and his sons." (Book 6, page 168, lines 283-285). However Hector still seems like he hasn't lost his faith in Paris and visits him to call him out to fight and protect Troy. I think that even though Hector is blaming Paris for all of the trouble he never really gets violent with him, merely aiming frustrated words at his brother.
